HTTP or HyperText Transfer Protocol is the network protocol used to deliver files and other data on the World Wide Web, whether they are HTML files, image files, query results or otherwise. HTTP is the protocol clients and servers use to communicate on the web. HTTP runs on top of TCP/IP. HTTP is a stateless protocol; in other words, it uses stateless connections. HTTP uses the request/response model. The client makes a "request" while the server sends back a "response". If the response from the server is an HTML page, then the HTML is "added" to the HTTP response. HTTP can serve up any type of document.
